Your First Osteopathy or Physiotherapy Appointment: What to Expect

By Dr Charbel Alam, Osteopath & Physiotherapist · 4 min read

Before you arrive

Preparing a few things makes the session more productive:

  • Recent scan reports, X-rays or letters from your doctor
  • A list of current medications
  • Notes on when the problem started and what makes it better or worse
  • Comfortable clothing such as shorts or leggings and a T-shirt

The consultation

Your first session begins with questions about your symptoms, general health, work, sport and goals. This helps tailor treatment and screen for anything that needs medical referral.

The examination looks at posture, how you move, joint range, muscle strength and, where relevant, nerve function.

Treatment and plan

Once the cause of your symptoms is clear, you will receive an explanation in plain language and, in most cases, begin treatment the same day.

You will leave with a few targeted exercises and an estimate of how many sessions you are likely to need. Mild soreness for a day or two after treatment is normal.
